What’s with the grumps?

Why is everyone so grumpy lately?

I’m sick of it, quite frankly. It’s exhausting having so many negative facebook updates from friends.

“I hate my job” (at least you have one)
“My neighbors suck!” (at least you have a roof over your head)
“Obama sucks” (at least you live in a free country where YOU the PEOPLE choose your president)
“Today/My life sucks”

Isn’t there anything positive you have to say? I’m not saying that I’m Miss Sunshine all of the time but sometimes I click on a friend’s page and only 1 of 5 status updates is something positive. That’s irritating…and really makes me want to press that handy little “Hide” button next to his/her name.

There’s a quote that in some way or another has crossed my path eight times in the last 10 or so days.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.” –Aristotle

There are two parts to this quote. The first being, “We are what we repeatedly do.” If you are repeatedly negative and dismal, that is what you are making yourself. The reason that you’re so miserable is because you have made yourself that way. You’re letting your lemons rot. Where’s the lemonade? Weren’t you thirsty?

On a similar note, Einstein once said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Is this how you live YOUR life? Do you start every Monday with the attitude, “Ugh…Monday again. Monday sucks. I hate you!”? Well, guess what you get? A crappy Monday. And if you start every Monday (and therefore every week) with that attitude, you will continue to get the SAME result.

Try something different! Have a MID-year resolution. Start every Monday positively and refreshed from your weekend. Stop letting this strange hatred for Mondays affect your start to the week and subsequently the week that follows. The way you start your Monday affects your whole day and your entire week. Make it a point to make Monday the BEST day of the week and you will have the BEST week! If this has to start Sunday, then so be it. Get to bed an hour early and take some time to wind down if it was a crazy busy weekend. Make your Saturday or your Sunday a no stress zone. Make that day about you and your family and make it a refreshing and relaxing day.

The second part of the quote, “Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.” It takes 21 days to make a habit. Keep this attitude up for less than a month and you’ve changed your outlook. And hopefully you’ve changed your surroundings from negative to positive.

Bad things are going to happen. Bad days are going to come. Expect the unexpected. Be prepared. Have an emergency fund ($1,000 minimum). Organize your house so that in a time of panic, things are in order and you can grab what you need on the go. Establish daily routines so that you are not losing keys, leaving your wallet on the counter or forgetting that huge project you’ve been working on until you’re half way to work.
